HISTORY OF HONEY IN KASHMIR

In India, Jammu and Kashmir is known to be one of the significant beekeeping places due to the presence of natural resources and favourable climatic conditions. In Kashmir Valley, processing of honey was introduced by the beekeeping experts from the Middle East during 1420-1470 AD. Among the honey bees, the Apis cerana strain are the highest honey-yielding bees than other counterparts.

WHAT WE DO?

We are using native honeybees widely known for being natural pollinators for a range of fruits and crops in the valley. Our aim is to retain the quality product in the process of removing, extracting and storing honey.

The honey extraction process starts with our field bees returning to hives after collecting nectar from the flowering plants. The nectar collected by the field bees is stored in wax cells in the hives where it is organically converted into honey. During the process, our experts for the honey extortion process reduce the moisture content to 14-21%. When the honey is ripe, bees cap the cells with beeswax. Currently, the methods used are brushing and shaking bees from each comb followed by removing the layers of honey, using honey from brood nests, escape boards and using bee blowers. Taking utmost precautions, our workers remove honey with minimal contamination and keep the product clean and pure all the way.

Benefits of Honey

  • Honey is an old sore throat and cold virus remedy.
  • Honey is a nutritious whole food with many medicinal properties.
  • The honey contains an array of plant chemicals known as antioxidants that help to protect your body from cell damage due to free radicals (free radicals contribute to the ageing process and chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease).
  • The honey naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, an antiseptic which is a remedy for many kinds of infection.
  • Honey is used to treat digestive issues such as diarrhoea and is effective as a treatment for Helicobacter pylori bacteria, though, a common cause of stomach ulcers.
  • Honey is the powerhouse of phytonutrients having antioxidant properties which researchers find beneficial for immune-boosting.
  • Honey is also a remedy to fall asleep quickly. Honey releases serotonin (a neurotransmitter that improves your mood), and the body converts serotonin into melatonin (a chemical compound that regulates the length and quality of sleep).
  • Honey helps you combat hangovers, since fructose speeds up the oxidation of alcohol by the liver. Taking a few tablespoons of honey increases the body's ability to metabolise alcohol, thereby limiting intoxication and more rapidly reducing alcohol blood levels.
  • Honey is a fantastic moisturiser and helps to heal patches of dry skin. You can use it everyday to soften up your knees and elbows, even chapped lips.
